I wonder if it would be possible to implement the illusion without the use of headphones. In theory you could rig a room with speakers, use cameras and face-recognition technology to monitor where the victim's ears are, and create all the same "virtual haircut" illusions. Now THAT would be freaky.
In the old Mission Impossible TV Series, they once had this Directional Speaker that they used to make someone hear voices that the people right next to him could not hear...
So if you could do that, and then add the additional dimension of stereo and simply track their head direction; You could really drive someone in a crowded room crazy, or feed them all sorts of mischievous disinformation...!!!
