Mr. Ostentatious
Based on A Dream : Friday, June 3, 2011 9:49:23 PM
This idea is only marginally based on a dream, but mostly on well tattered themes that i thoroughly enjoy.
First: Mr. Ostentatious’ name was not really Mr. Ostentatious. That was a somewhat offensive name for Mr. Austere Tangerines that was only used by Mrs. Uto Hyrax. He got this name, because while Mrs. Hyrax was just an ordinary rabbit, Mr. Tangerines went about all dressed to the elevens, with a selection of many hats and vests and spats. A Spat is A Gaiter of sorts, which is worn by small animals that prefer to go barefoot, but rather take on The look of footwear. Mrs. Hyrax would often chastise Papaya for being too Ostentatious. “It’s not ladylike.”
The Film Starts off by introducing Papaya Ehyah, A frail 9 year old that keeps to herself on the playground & gets all the answers wrong when she’s called on in class. She’s actually quite bright, but she gets terrible nervous when she’s called upon. And her answers are always right, but in an odd tangental sort of way.
One day while Papaya is out sitting alone in one corner of the playground, she happens to notice a rabbit in the bushes on the other side of the chain-link fence. It seems to look straight at Papaya and wink! Then it hops off. The next day, Papaya sees the rabbit again, but the rabbit seems very shy. A few days later; Papaya gathers some clover and puts it in a small basket left over from easter decorations. She sneaks around the fence and set the basket out by where the rabbit is usually seen. She then retreats to the other side of the fence and waits for the rabbit to come along. After a while, the rabbit reappears and begins to eat the clover. The Rabbit then looks right at Papaya and says; “This certainly is a very nice basket, May I keep it?”
“Oh My Goodness!” Gasps Papaya, “You can talk!”
“Hmp.” The Rabbit goes on eating the clover, “Did you make this basket yourself?”
“Uhmmm— No, I found it. It’s from The Easter Party.”
“So... It’s not magical, or anything like that?”
“No, It’s just an ordinary basket.”
“Perfectly Harmless.”
“Yes, I would certainly think so.”
“Can I keep it, I have several nice baskets already, But I seem to be collecting them. This one would be the nicest one I have yet seen!”
“I’m sure it would be OK.”
The Rabbit then nodded appreciatively, then finished the remaining clover and hopped off with the basket under one arm.”
Papaya didn’t see the rabbit the next day, and was beside herself with wonder. She was even more distracted than usual in class and even her father noticed that she seemed out of sorts. Papaya was the sort of child that rarely discussed things with anyone, and didn’t tell anyone about the rabbit.
That weekend; She returned to the school and looked through the small woods beside the schoolyard for the rabbit. She’d brought some carrots and put them in a basket that she’d made herself. It wasn’t nearly as nice as the other basket, but Papaya thought that she’d done a very nice job making it. Just when she was sure that she’d never seen the rabbit again, that she’d probably just imagined seeing it in the first place, the rabbit reappeared and said; “Did you make this basket?”
“Yes, I did.” Papaya was much calmer today than she’d been the previous day.
“Did you weave any magic into it?” Asked the rabbit.
“I don’t think so. It’s just a basket. Do you like carrots?”
“I’ve seldom come across a carrot out here in the Radish Forest, But I think that I don’t like them. I prefer Clover.”
So Papaya ate most of the carrots, and the rabbit admired the basket.
“May i see your other baskets?” Asked Papaya.
The rabbit then took Papaya to a large tree and the two of them entered a very large burrow with tables & chairs, a Franklin Stove, 3 or 4 doors leading down passages or into other rooms and along one wall was a cabinet of baskets. Some of them looked very odd, apparently dating back thousands of years. The rabbit took Papaya’s basket and set it at eye level between one made of unicorn hair & another knitted from lunar dust. She then made some clover tea and introduced herself as Mrs. Uto Hyrax. They then had some biscuits made from clover seeds, and clover jelly. The biscuits were a little chewy, but Papaya said they were delicious, which they were.
After an hour or so; Mrs. Hyrax suggested that Papaya should be getting home for dinner.
When Papaya got home, her parents were frantic, as she’d been missing for 2 weeks!
At School; The other students were remarkably uninterested in where she’d been.
On the playground; She met Mrs. Hyrax and told her about the 2 weeks that’s she’d been missing. “Oh my!” Declared Mrs. Hyrax — “It’s been ages since I’ve had a visitor, and I completely forgot about faery rules, It won’d happen again!”
“Faery Rules?! Are you a Faery?”
“Goodness No! But my chantey is near the Faery’s mound. You are fortunate that you didn’t go missing for hundreds of years!” And then Mrs. Hyrax giggled a little, and then fell shame faced. “Oh! If it had been centuries! Oh! What would have become of you! I must be more careful!”
Over the next few weeks, Papaya & Mrs. Hyrax would have several minor adventures.
One day they came across Mr. Austere Tangerines in the forest. Mrs. Hyrax apparently knew Mr. Tangerines, but they were not friends. “Good Afternoon!” Clamored Mr. Tangerines, Deeply bowing with his feathered hat making a wide sweep as he bent over before Papaya. “Allow me to Introduce myself, as Mrs. Hyrax is reluctant to extend this small courtesy! I am Mr. Austere Tangerines, And who might you be?”
Mrs. Hyrax was completely flummoxed, Not only by the sudden appearance of Mr. Tangerines, but by being accused of this bitter indiscretion!
“My name is Papaya Ehyah, Pleased to meet you!”
They then got to know one another, and a little bit of the rabbit’s history was revealed. They weren’t exactly enemies, but merely of very different life styles so that they’re paths rarely crossed.
Some time later; Mr. Tangerines thought that it would be a nice gift if he purchased a watch for Papaya, So that she could keep track of Faery time and even mute it within reason.
Mr. Tangerines, Mrs. Hyrax and Papaya hopped off to a small shop in town where the shop keepers and other customers did not seem surprised by the presence of The Two Talking Rabbits and A little girl. They looked at several nice wrist watches, but Mr. Tangerines said that he had a strong preference for the more elegant pocket watch. Mrs. Hyrax mentioned that most watches these days do so much more than just keep time, and the clerk then showed them some nice electronic watches that had many functions, but Papaya thought that they were too confusing. “They are awfully Ostentatious.” Whispered Mrs. Hyrax. Mr. Tangerines, after examining several more display cases brought everyone’s attention to a very nice railroader’s watch with several additional hands and 5 tiny windows. Everyone agreed it was a nice watch, and Mrs. Hyrax bought a nice chain to go with it.
The Next day at school; Papaya reached into her pocket to show the other children on the playground her new watch, but Mrs. Hyrax, who was sitting on the bench beside her, suddenly gushed; “It’s a very nice watch dear, but don’t be so Ostentatious; It’s not ladylike!” The other children weren’t terribly interested in anything having to do with Papaya anyways and ran off.
It should be noted here that in all their adventures, The other children & adults, Other than those in the jewelry shop, never seem to notice Mr. Tangerines or Mrs. Hyrax. They instead see Papaya acting very oddly, but it might be that The Rabbits are near by, They merely go unnoticed. ( Do they Exist? ) ( Is Papaya just imagining them? )
Then things massively ratchet up with an invasion of Aliens.
( Is there really an Invasion of Aliens, or is this just another crazy make-believe adventure of Papaya’s? Whenever we are involved with Papaya, all these things are real, but when we are with the adults and other children, they seem to miss out on all this, or the very odd things that are going on, seem to be caused by other things. )
From time to time; Mr. Tangerines will point out some feature on the watch that Papaya had neglected to notice. As time goes by; The number of functions on the watch reaches into the many hundreds.
Then Papaya & The Rabbits save the world, driving off the aliens.
All this time; We are convinced that all this was just a psychotic delusion of Papaya, but—
After Saving the world, Papaya gets up from bed and goes down to breakfast, and while her mother is pouring her some cereal, she notices the watch. “My, That certainly is a nice watch you have there! Where did you get that?”
“A friend of mine; Mr. Tangerines bought it for me, It does lots of fun things!” And then she demonstrates a few of the features. Her mother then notices Mrs. Hyrax hopping in from outside and Papaya introduces her to her mother. As Mrs. Hyrax’s cottage was destroyed in the War with The Aliens, Papaya invited her to come live with her. “She’s fully housebroken,” Papaya giggled, “And she only eats Clover!”
“Well; She can stay if she makes her bed in the morning.”
Mrs. Hyrax sniffed at the suggestion that she wouldn’t make her own bed, and shortly there after, Papaya carried Mrs. Hyrax upstairs to her room.
Papaya’s father then came bustling in, out of breath, “They’re gone! The Aliens are gone! They’ve just left!”
“Oh Thank Gawd!” Exclaimed Papaya’s mother. “How in the world did that ever happen?”
“No one seems to know! They just climbed back into those horrible looking ships of theirs and left!”
A little later, Mr. Ehyah is outside on a ladder. Behind him is the town in ruins, smoldering from The Alien Invasion. He is Stapling some sheet of plastic over the side of the house that was blown away, and notices Mr. Tangerines laying on Papayas bed. Although he can’t hear the rabbit talking to Papaya, He is wondering what they are going to do for their next grand adventure. “I think that we should put a solid effort in obtaining a nice hot bath for Papaya.” Asserted Mrs. Hyrax.
Mr. Ehyah came in and exclaimed to his wife; “There’s a large rabbit sitting on Papaya’s Bed.”
“Yes, I know dear, She found it in the garden, It only eats Cauliflowers.”
“Oh.”
